If you suspect that the compressor of your heat pump is beginning to fail, there are a handful of signs that can clarify the situation for you. Here are the most common indicators that you may need a new compressor soon.
Weird Sounds
Noises such as clanking, loud vibrations or ticking are all indications that the compressor for the heat pump may be failing. Our licensed HVAC technicians can diagnose the source of the troublesome noises and repair it.
Inability to Power On
When the compressor is failing, the entire heat pump may be unable to turn on. Before calling a technician, check the thermostat to ensure it is set at the desired temperature. This is a surefire way to avoid an unnecessary service call.
Breaker Constantly Tripping
If your circuit breaker seems to trip constantly, and you can’t figure out why, a failing compressor could be the cause. Check all your other appliances that might be causing the issue before contacting an HVAC professional.
Leaking Refrigerant
Any occurrence of the compressor leaking refrigerant fluid is a telltale sign that it is failing. The compressor’s main function is to pressurize and circulate the refrigerant. Indicators of low refrigerant include room-temperature air from the registers, a gurgling sound from the indoor unit, and frozen coils.
Weak Airflow
Weak airflow can indicate that your heat pump’s compressor is failing. However, other factors, like a failing blower motor or a clogged air filter, can also cause weak airflow. First, check the air filter to see if you need to replace it, and if that doesn’t work, call for repair.
